MM ~ Smooth (Santana feat. Rob Thomas)

Rob Thomas originally  wrote and recorded this song as demo for Santana, thinking that George Michael would eventually sing it. But after hearing Thomas sing his song, Santana decided to have him record the final version.

"Smooth" went on to become a massive hit in 1999.

Music Monday ~ Radio Ga Ga (Queen)

Long before Lady Gaga entered the music scene, we had Radio Ga Ga, a 1984 song performed by Queen. This was one of the rock songs in my generation that was well loved not only by rockers but by disco-going people as well.

Rockin' on the dance floor !!!

A Greasy Flashback (1978)

"Grease" (1978) was one of the greatest musical films of all time.

One favorable review aptly described it as: "Grease is a pleasing, energetic musical with infectiously catchy songs and an ode to young love that never gets old."

Here are some of the songs in its soundtrack that became smash hits at that time...

Music Monday ~ The Reflex (Duran Duran)

Released in 1984, "The Reflex" became English pop band Duran Duran's most successful single. This pop band was such a big hit in the early 1980s along with Spandau Ballet, Wham! and Culture Club. Their sharp and elegant image earned them the nickname "the prettiest boys in rock." Indeed, they all looked gorgeous in the then-new music video channel, MTV.

Who would ever forget the prettiest boy in the group, lead singer Simon Le Bon?

Music Monday ~ Debbie Gibson's Hits

Remember former teen pop icon Debbie Gibson? She was popular in the late 80's until the early 90's. Her song "Foolish Beat" made her the youngest artist ever to write, produce and perform a Billboard Hit 100 #1 single, a record she held for 20 years until surpassed in 2007 by soulja boy.

I'm feeling nostalgic now. Let's listen to her hits again...

Music Monday ~ Eye of the Tiger (Survivor)

Upon the request of Sylvester Stallone, the American rock group Survivor wrote this song for the 1982 blockbuster movie Rocky III. It speaks of a man's fight for survival.... Definitely a feel-good song.

I am featuring this song today as a tribute to the recent victory of boxing champ Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao... He made all Filipinos very proud!

"We are witnessing one of the all-time boxing greats, and the impressive part about it is that Manny Pacquiao doesn't talk about how great he is. He proves it, fight in and fight out."

Risin' up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all in the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds 'til we take to the street
For we kill with the skill to survive

Risin' up, straight to the top
Have the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

The Wolfgramm Family or better known as The Jets had a number of Billboard Hot 100 hits from 1985 to the late 80's. Their ballads "You Got It All" and "Make It Real" made it to No. 1 in the Billboard adult contemporary chart.

Music Monday - Build Me Up Buttercup (The Foundations)

It's Disco/Retro Music Monday again! Yippeeeeeeeee!

Build Me Up Buttercup is a song that even my own kids love. It first came out in 1968 but it was featured in many movies, one of which was the 1998 romantic comedy film There's Something About Mary which catapulted Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller to stardom.

Retro Music Monday (featuring HEART's Music)

Rock band Heart ditched their hard rock aspirations to make slick, radio-friendly pop music like "What About Love" (1985) and "These Dreams" (1986) for a successful comeback. And who can ever forget the group's powerful ballad "Alone" (1987) which topped the charts that same year?

By the mid-1990's, Heart went back to their hard rock roots which they continue to play today. The group was ranked #57 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock."
